Mindful

If you have ever felt as though your life is swiftly passing you by. You are right, it is. Not because time has sped up in the past 10 to 15 years but because you have allowed it to.  We feel as though we don’t get a chance to enjoy it.  Well you don’t. You are so busy with everything that is going on with your life and what is not going on with your life, that you are turning into one big ball of negative energy.

So how do we fix this? Well it is simple. You need to stop and take stock of what is happening around you. When I mean take stock I mean the whole stock. Here is my short.

Once upon a time I would get up every morning and I was always in a lull. I knew what I had planned for the day, my goals would be set and all I had to do was to go and achieve them, however something was missing. Fast forward. I realised, it was my sleeping environment.  Without hesitation I started decorating my bedroom. Including  buying new bedsheets and light fittings.

THE RESULT

A bedroom I was quite proud off. Anyway as I went to bed with my newly decorated room, new pillows, cushions, bedside lamps, I suddenly became aware. I was aware of my surroundings and aware of me. I climbed into my bed and at once felt some kind of tranquility. I felt really good. I was ready for a good nights sleep and I was ready to wake up in the morning. It took me a while to fall asleep as I was just staring at my newish bedroom. I felt accomplished and proud of myself. I put my mind to it and I accomplished it.

NEXT MORNING

I woke up next morning still buzzing from the night before.  I stepped out of bed with a different feeling. Now here is the crucial bit. As  I began to make my bed, I took notice of what I was doing, the shake of the duvet cover; the plumping of the pillows and the arrangement of my cushions. I did this with a smile on my face. I took in every second of making my bed. Silly as it may sound, I felt as though I have accomplished something, as small as it may be, it was pretty big considering how I use to make my bed, which was in a lull and not really paying attention to what I was doing.

THE STEP

This is one of those accidental steps that life puts in your way, cause it knows exactly what you need and when you need it. As you embark on your life be mindful of your surroundings, take stock on what you are doing and why you are doing it. Start of small with things like making your bed, making that favourite hot drink. Even when I tidy my bedroom, I take it in. Before I revamped my bedroom, it was in a constant mess. My tidied bedroom would last 24-48 hours before it was trashed and it would stay like that for a good long while. Now my bedroom has not been trashed for 5 months straight. I am aware of the work that I have put in and I no longer look at my bedroom as just a place to sleep, but a room that I take pride in.

NEXT STEP

Try this yourself. Try it in areas of your life-like work, relationships. You get a whole new perspective and your attitude towards the things you do or take for granted will change. Think of it this way. Going back to the bedroom, you do not think about it and you take it for granted, cause you think you will always have it. But how many homeless people also thought they will always have a bedroom?

We lose sight on the things that are right in front of us, because we are too busy focused on the wrong things, worrying about the future, dwelling on the past. By being mindful will not slow time, but you will feel more fulfilled and everyday will feel fulfilled.
